  • Test the Soil: Use a simple Ph soil test kit to check if your soil is acid or alkaline to ensure your lawn has the proper pH to get started. Lime Chart
  • Mow Existing Grass: Mow or clip the existing grass as closely as possible.
  • Remove Grass Clippings: Remove clippings and rake, aerate or dethatch area where there is existing grass. This process will not adversely effect your existing lawn. Scratching up the soil surface helps to give the new grass seed better seed to soil contact.
  • Spread Grass Seed, Fertilizer & Lime: Apply lime if needed to acquire the correct pH. Apply Pennington Lawn Starter Fertilizer* after reading and following the instructions on the package. Following the coverage rates listed on the package for overseeding, apply your grass seed using a broadcast (recommended) or drop spreader. For small areas hand application will work fine. To help avoid missing spots it is recommended using a checker board pattern applying 1/2 the recommended amount of seed in each direction.

(NOTE: Never apply Crabgrass Preventer, Weed & Feed or Lawn Weed Killers to a newly seeded lawn.)

  • Cover Seed: This step is necessary to make sure the grass seed gets worked down through the existing grass so it has good seed to soil contact. Turn your leaf rake upside down and simply drag it lightly over the seeded area.
  • Watering the Newly Seeded Area: In order to keep the grass seed moist, water often, at least once per day, lightly keeping the top inch of soil moist. Continue watering lightly until seedlings are well established. Watering instructions.
  • Mowing the Overseeded Area: Since this area has existing grass, continue mowing on your regular schedule.
  • Long Term Maintenance: Do not apply Crabgrass Preventer, Lawn Weed Killers or Weed & Feed until your plants have matured. This is usually 60-90 days after germination. Always water after application. Then you can begin a normal Lawn Care Program.
