How To Water

  • Newly planted Lawns: Water once a day for approximately 10 minutes. Since the seed you just planted is in the top 1/4" of soil and the goal is to keep the seed moist so it will germinate. Excessive amounts of water will create runoff or puddling causing the seed to rot. Infrequent, spotty waterings will cause the seed to become dry and lose germination.
  • Seed begins to Germinate: Begin watering every 2 or 3 days for extended periods of time. 20 to 30 minutes per watering applying 1/4" of water per session. This will help to train the roots of your newly planted seedlings to dig deep within the soil to access water, which will help the lawn to become more drought tolerant.
  • Lawn becomes Established: Once your lawn is established you will want to begin to maintain a consistent watering schedule depending on the current weather conditions. As a general rule of thumb water 1 to 2 times per week applying a total of 1" of water to your entire lawn. Infrequent, small amounts of water applied to your lawn actually does more harm than good.
  • Best Time to Water: The absolute best time to water your lawn is early in the morning. This is the coolest part of the day which minimizes evaporation and allows the grass plant and soil to take up as much of the water as possible. Early evening and night time watering is not recommended because this will cause the soil to remain damp for too long and allow fungus and disease the best opportunity to develop. Your main goal is to dampen the soil enough to provide the grass plants with sufficient hydration without allowing it to stay that way for excessive lengths of time.
